Description

This empowering class is designed to guide timid and/or inexperienced knitters through two operations that are famous for causing anxiety in the uninitiated: the cutting of steeks (slashed openings in hand-knitted fabric), and the installation of zippers. We’ll be doing both by hand–no sewing machine required!

One three hour workshop

Pre-requisites: Fluency in the basics of knitting, including knitting in the round, fluency in stranded two-color work (i.e., Fair Isle Knitting), and completion prior to class of a homework assignment.

Materials:

For the homework assignment:

  • two balls of smooth, firmly spun worsted-weight wool yarn (for example, Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd's Worsted) in highly contrasting colors. Please note that slippery yarns (pure acrylic, silk, cotton) are not generally suited to the cutting of steeks, and should be avoided.

  • One 16” circular needle in a size that yields a firm fabric with the student’s yarn of choice.

For class:

  • The completed homework assignment. One ball (partial is fine) of wool yarn in a weight equal to, or slightly lighter than, the yarns used to knit the homework; it should be of a color that contrasts well with the homework yarns.

  • One crochet hook, equal to or slightly smaller in diameter than the knitting needles used to knit the homework.

  • One pair of sharp scissors.

  • Notebook and pen or pencil for taking notes.

  • Additional materials will be provided in class by the teacher and are included in your class fee.

Class fees are not refundable unless the class is canceled by the shop. If cancellation is made outside of 72 hours of class start time, you will be provided with a store credit for use for any future purchase with the shop. Unless otherwise indicated, our classes are for adults only. Your registration is valid for the dates listed in the description and may not be transferred to other class dates.

We offer a full refund within 30 days on any full priced yarn, bag or clothing item in original condition with receipt. Wound yarn or yarn smelling of smoke or containing pet hair may not be returned. Unfortunately, there are no returns on gift cards, needles, notions, books, patterns or discounted yarns.
